Older Adults and
Seniors Program
The Older Adults and Seniors Program provides opportunities for people ages 55+ to connect and spend time in nature.
Meeting twice monthly from July to October, participants explore activities ranging from gardening and site stewardship to canoeing, kayaking, yoga, arts & crafts, guided walks, and more.
Connection, Movement, and Time in Nature
-
This program is for seniors, by seniors – a philosophy rooted in inclusion and empowerment. Seniors have been playing a crucial role, participating in the development, leadership, and evaluation phases of the program. Our current senior leadership group is made up of individuals who bring a rich diversity of experience, skillsets, and connection to Power To Be. The group includes both long-time volunteers, as well as community members who saw this project as the perfect opportunity to get involved for the first time.
-
Our program focuses on three central experiences:
Recreation: Activities that focus on fun, play, movement, and adventure.
Learning: Opportunities to learn about birds (with Rocky Point Bird Observatory), watersheds (with Peninsula Streams and Shorelines), and much more!
Giving Back: From gardening and site stewardship to program support, we provide opportunities for you to get involved and make a difference.
-
Whether it’s a guided walk, a paddle on the lake, or a shared moment in the garden, this program fosters connection – not just with the land, but with each other.
Focusing on gentle movement, the program will offer a wide range of group-based activities, from yoga and arts & crafts sessions to guided nature walks, canoeing, kayaking, gardening, visits from local conservation groups, and much more.
-
This program provides seniors and older adults with meaningful opportunities for connection, movement, and adventure.
Activities are designed to:
Increase time spent in nature
Improve mental, emotional, and physical well-being
Increase social connection and reduce isolation and loneliness
Remove financial barriers
Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
“I wanted to join this program to encourage seniors to take advantage of everything that this beautiful island offers us.”
- Kimberleigh Doyle, Seniors Leadership Group volunteer
