Power To Be Receives Federal Support for Pathways for Seniors Program

Power To Be is thrilled to share that we’ve received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program to launch our new initiative: Pathways for Seniors. This federal grants and contributions program supports projects that are led or inspired by seniors who are making a difference in the lives of others in their communities.

This support comes at a crucial time. In the Greater Victoria Region and beyond, there is a growing need for programs that offer seniors meaningful ways to stay active, connected, and engaged. Many older adults face isolation and limited opportunities to contribute their skills and wisdom to their communities. Pathways for Seniors is designed to change that.

This program is for seniors, by seniors – a philosophy rooted in inclusion and empowerment. Seniors have been playing a crucial role, participating in the development, leadership, and evaluation phases of the pilot program. Our current senior leadership group is made up of six individuals who bring a rich diversity of experience, skillsets, and connection to Power To Be. The group includes both long-time volunteers, as well as community members who saw this project as the perfect opportunity to get involved for the first time. From gardening and site restoration to intergenerational connection through mentoring youth, participants will find opportunities to connect, contribute, and thrive.

Nature is at the heart of this initiative, and our one-of-a-kind, fully accessible Prospect Lake site provides the perfect setting for community-building, nature access, and reflection. Designed to welcome individuals of all abilities, the site features wheelchair-accessible trails, adaptive equipment, accessible docks, camping platforms, and kitchen facilities. These features ensure that every senior, regardless of physical ability, can participate fully in recreational and social activities. Whether it’s a self-guided walk, a paddle on the lake, or a shared moment in the garden, these experiences foster connection – not just with the land, but with each other.

By removing barriers and creating space for connection, Pathways for Seniors aims to provide up to eight monthly engagement opportunities throughout 2025. The program will also include opportunities for families and caregivers to engage alongside their loved ones, strengthening bonds and building community through shared experiences in nature.

Thank you to the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program for the funding you’ve provided us to make this program happen, and for recognizing the importance of this work. Your support is helping us build a more inclusive, connected, and vibrant community – one where seniors are celebrated, supported, and never left behind.
