Supporting local waters with Swim Drink Fish Canada
Power To Be is thrilled to be partnering with Swim Drink Fish, a Canadian charity organization dedicated to monitoring, restoring, and protecting local waters. Our Prospect Lake site is a new Water Monitoring Hub where Swim Drink Fish can conduct their water quality monitoring program.
Juan de Fuca Expedition with Wilderness School
As summer draws to a close, we celebrate yet another successful Wilderness School expedition. This year marked the fifteenth cohort of the Wilderness School, embarking on the challenging Juan de Fuca trail—a first-ever backpacking trip for most participants.
Honouring National Indigenous Peoples Month
Tēnā Koutou, Nau Mai Koutou, Kia Ora Tātou Katoa! (A warm and generous welcome, greeting and acknowledgement to all of you reading this post) Ko Tangata Māori ahau (I am a Māori Person ‘visiting’ here on these Indigenous lands and waters of Vancouver Island)
Power To Summit 2023 Recap!
On the weekend of May 26-28, 2023, Power To Be held our 6th Power To Summit virtual fundraising event, which saw 80 teams of four racers work together to climb, fundraise, and spend time together in support of Power To Be.
Wilderness Wellness: Embracing nature to heal
At Power To Be, we believe that nature can help us grow and find belonging. The concept of wellness is woven throughout our programs. With the introduction of the Wilderness Wellness stream, we are building more intentional programs to support people beyond feeling good with the goal of supporting them in functioning well.
Making our community feel at home with inclusive infrastructure
At Power To Be, we want everyone to feel included. We are proud of the adaptive and inclusive approach we use in our programming, so when the opportunity arose to build a new facility at our Prospect Lake site, we wanted to apply that same approach to our building design.
Housewarming: Welcome to Our Gateway To Nature
On September 28th, Power To Be invited a group of our participants and community group partners to join us on site and celebrate our new space for a housewarming event. This occasion brought participants, volunteers, and staff together for an evening of exploration, laughter, and pizza as we gathered in a place that has come to mean so much for our organization.
Putting Down Roots: Power To Be’s Gateway To Nature
We are getting closer and closer to welcoming our Power To Be community to a place they can truly call home—our gateway to nature at Prospect Lake. With this new site, we can give back by creating a space where our community can come together to learn, innovate and inspire others to explore the outdoors. After many years of planning, hard work, and collaboration we are almost ready to open the doors to our new home.
Go Explore: Tod Inlet
In the north end of Gowlland Tod Provincial Park next to Butchart Gardens, lies the beautiful Tod Inlet. I have hiked down through the mossy forest above Tod Creek to the beautiful inlet in several different seasons. There is always something beautiful to see!
Skiing my way through Groan and Growth
Hello! My name is Steph, and I am a Program Facilitator for PTB in the Vancouver office. While I’ve been working as a staff member with Power To Be since the spring of 2019 (after having volunteered for a year), this past winter I took a step away from the PTB community and made a giant leap into the interior of B.C., to a small mountain town called “Revelstoke”.
Go Explore: Sooke Hills and Sea to Sea Regional Parks
One of the many things that make living in British Columbia, and more specifically on Vancouver Island, so special is the relatively quick and easy access we have to an abundance of natural and wild spaces. Located a 45-minute drive from Victoria, and less than 15 minutes apart, are two great examples: the Sooke Hills and Sea to Sea Regional Parks.
Gratitude for Place
For the past 4 years the Power To Be team has been building a relationship with the land that makes up our Prospect Lake site. We have learned about its history. We give gratitude to the WSANEC, Malahat and Lekwungen peoples who have graciously shared teachings and oral histories of the land and ancestors.
